Varenna

A very special place.  Varenna is a jewel with its cavernous, winding alleyways.  The Vecchia Varenna is an old and delicious trattoria sitting right over the water.  There are numerous beautiful and exhausting hikes around Varenna.  A wonderful day is to lunch at Vecchia Varenna and walk high on the mountains over to Bellano.  The views are stunning.  Varenna is the fabled setting for Alessandro Manzoni’s famous novel I Promessi Sposi (The Betrothed).
